Get to Know the Sewing Machine with Erin - now a GROUP CLASS!

Do you have a sewing machine sitting around in your home that you would like to start using but don't know where to begin? Are you considering purchasing one but would like to learn the ropes first? This is the class for you!

With this class, you will get to know a sewing machine well enough to start on the very basics of sewing. This is not necessarily a sewing lesson, but a way to familiarize yourself with the machine and lose the anxiety about operating one. Think of it as driver's training for sewing. With this knowledge, you will then be prepared for future sewing classes and/or to continue to learn independently.

What you will learn:

  • The mechanics of how a machine makes stitches using upper and lower threads
  • Threading the machine
  • Sewing straight, zig-zag, and back stitches
  • Navigating stitches through curves and corners
  • Adjusting stitches (width and length)
  • Turning a seamed corner and clipping seam allowances

All materials will be provided. Students will be working on Singer 4423 Heavy Duty home sewing machines in the studio for consistency in a group class setting.

REQUIRED:

Please provide your email and phone number with your registration for essential class communication. Your registration must be paid in full to reserve your spot.

About the teacher:

Erin is the owner of Aranea Craft Studio and a lifelong Hayward Resident. She started sewing as a teenager, which eventually led her to study costume design at CSUEB. Before diving into the fiber arts, Erin worked as a dressmaker in the area, sewing vintage & historical replicas as well as formals, wedding dresses, and costumes. She encourages people to learn more about the benefits of slow fashion, pulling from local resources, and loves to see those around her learn and grow through creativity.
